Mathematics Made Easy: How to Stop Being Afraid of WAEC Maths

Maths anxiety is real โ€” but it can be overcome. Here is a practical, step-by-step guide to building confidence and scoring credits in WAEC Mathematics.

Why Do So Many Students Fail WAEC Maths?

Mathematics is one of the most failed WAEC subjects in Nigeria. Many students carry negative beliefs about maths ("I am not a maths person") that become self-fulfilling prophecies. The truth is: with the right approach, anyone can pass WAEC Mathematics.

The Most Important WAEC Maths Topics

WAEC Mathematics covers a wide syllabus, but these topics appear almost every year:

  • Number and Numeration (number bases, logarithms, indices, surds)
  • Algebra (linear equations, quadratic equations, simultaneous equations)
  • Geometry (angles, triangles, circles, construction)
  • Statistics (mean, median, mode, frequency tables, histograms)
  • Trigonometry (sine, cosine, tangent, angles of elevation and depression)
  • Mensuration (areas, volumes, perimeters)
  • Commercial Maths (profit/loss, percentages, simple and compound interest)

Daily Practice is Non-Negotiable

Maths is not a reading subject โ€” it is a doing subject. You must practice every single day. Even 30 minutes of focused practice per day will show remarkable improvement within weeks. Start with topics you find easier to build confidence, then tackle harder ones.

Show Your Working

WAEC awards marks for correct working even when the final answer is wrong. Never skip steps. Write every single step clearly. A student who shows working can earn 3-4 marks on a question even if they make an arithmetic error at the end.

Use EduGames NG for Practice

Our free mathematics games cover fractions, algebra, statistics, number bases and more. Play them regularly to reinforce concepts in an engaging way. Games make abstract concepts feel concrete.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Not reading questions carefully (a very common source of lost marks)
  • Rounding off answers too early in multi-step calculations
  • Skipping questions โ€” attempt every question, even partially
  • Not checking answers when time permits

On the Day: Time Management

WAEC Maths has two papers. In Paper 2 (essay/theory), allocate roughly 8-10 minutes per question. If a question is taking too long, move on and return to it. Do not spend 30 minutes on one question and leave three others blank.
